Much to the relief of BP, the well appears to be holding pressure. BP wants this capping to work, but not for the reason you think. This cap provides for the possibility of 100% capture of the flowing oil by the pumping rigs on the surface. That was its stated purpose. If oil is allowed to flow and be captured, we will finally have an accurate flow rate that can be used to calculate the amount leaked over the past 87 days. Since BP will be fined for every gallon spilled, not having a firm number will allow them to litigate a value which will certainly be less than the actual value.
NOAA: The offshore forecast has been temporarily stopped due to small amounts of oil, the absence of recent observations confirming significant amounts of oil, and the large separation between the loop current complex and the oil slick. Forecasts will resume if the threat returns.
